its used to keep devices locked down and to give power to the manufacturer to decide what is published

When hacking such devices, sometimes you come accross various keys for things, and this can be exciting as it opens possiblity of breaking these systems,
but then you need a place to share such keys and a way to share them around, companies like to go after you if you do that,

often these keys are used in properitary formats that also need to be reversed and such to actually make use of, its a tiresome endeavor-
if your keys are obtainable via reverse engineering, they may as well just be public-
